Training and volunteering

East Midlands Wood Recycling CIC is dependent on the help given by volunteers from the local community. We offer volunteer opportunities and work placements to anyone who wants to contribute to the continuation and growth of the project, which includes but is not limited to school work experience, the long-term unemployed, people with special needs, people with mental health conditions, and other socially disadvantaged groups.

As a small enterprise, we all need to be versatile and be prepared to share in a multitude of tasks, but the work involves a good deal of manual labour and will predominantly be to collect timber from a range of locations around the Derby/Nottingham area.

Why volunteer?

There are many possible reasons to volunteer, but here are a few of the most common:

Improve your employment prospects

If you’re struggling to find work, some recent experience with a positive reference can be very helpful. As well as providing training and experience, we work with local employers to find opportunities for promising volunteers.

Help the environment and your community

Do something positive with other people who share your aspirations.

Build your skills and confidence

If you’re interested in activities like driving or woodworking we can offer tools, advice, and practical, on-the-job training. Volunteers can choose to participate in the 12-part Community Wood Recycling Real Work training programme, which covers every aspect of our work, from basic health and safety to the environmental implications of sustainability.

Work available

There are a wide range of activities based around wood recycling, including:

  • Collecting waste wood from building sites and from other organisations that generate wood/wood-type waste (either driving the truck or being “driver’s mate”)
  • Sorting, de-nailing and generally preparing the wood for sale
  • Displaying the wood for sale
  • Retailing the wood to the public (serving customers, keeping the “shop” tidy and well-stocked and items properly displayed)
  • Sanding/finishing wood to customer requirements
  • Assisting with office functions such as admin/marketing/record keeping

Hot drinks are provided free of charge on site and there’s provision for indoor seating, hand washing facilities and a toilet. We provide a daily lunch allowance of £4.00 for a five hour “shift”, as well as reasonable expenses for travel to and from the enterprise when volunteering.

Help will always be appreciated. No experience or particular skills are needed and we will welcome as much or as little time as you can spare.
